This Kerman rug was woven during the turn of the 20th Century.
This pictorial rug features a central scene of a lion, tiger, and mouse atop a sandy open field and flanked by sage ground cornices. The bottom cornices depict a wolf attacking a rabbit while the top cornices depict a snake attacking a duck in front of their ducklings. The scenes are a little gruesome and include the rare addition of blood but are true to the natural order. With deeper consideration it becomes evident the rug is depicting a variation of the allegory of the "lion and the mouse". The mouse, one of the weakest in the animal kingdom, is shown mercy by the lion and the tiger, among the strongest. A powerful message rendered in soothing tones.
In very good condition, with very light color run in some areas. Low pile, with a fine handle.
