Turkmen Yomut Ensi Rug - 4'6 x 5

Regular price $1,450.00 Sale

This Turkmen Ensi rug was woven by the Yomut during the first quarter of the 20th century in Central Asia.

An Ensi rug is a type of rug that hangs at the entrance of the Turkmen tent, or öy, in place of a door.

This Ensi is composed of a Hatchli field, a term used to describe when the field is divided into four panels by a cross. The quartered field is covered in small, diagonally arranged decorative elements, perhaps reminiscent of the Yomut Eagle motif found in the skirt borders, or elems. The inner border motif of the cross is a serrated leaf and tulip design. The design is mirrored and variated throughout the inner border, making it seem like multiple devices, adding to the complexity of the design. The outer borders are composed of a geometric vine and leaf meander for the main border, and a running dog motif for the minor border.

The color palette is composed of stunning deep aubergine, indigo blues, and madder reds, with soft ivories providing detail and contrast.

In very good condition, signs of wear consistent with age. The pile is low, with a sturdy but flowy handle.
