This Mashwani Baluch rug was handwoven in Afghanistan during the 2nd quarter of the 20th century. The blue, ivory and purple field is decorated with five curvilinear latch-hook diamond medallions. Within the central medallions are five cruciform motifs outlined in ivory wool except for the top one, which is outlined in blue. The latch-hook design vibrates outward towards the left and right borders in a lozenge patten. This particular hooked pattern is traditional of Mashwani Baluch rugs. The main border is filled with alternating blue and purple diamonds. The minor borders are composed of a purple and ivory candy-cane stripe and rams horns. In great condition, signs of wear consistent with age. Pile is full and soft, handle is loose. A real gem.
