Caucasian Soumak rug with lozenge and diamond pattern on indigo blue ground. in fair condition with some wear

Caucasian Soumak Rug - 4'7 x 7'9

Regular price $975.00 Sale

Soumak rug handwoven in the Caucasus during the early 20th century.

This charming Soumak rug is composed of a geometric lozenge and diamond motif laid out in a vertical direction. Symbols found throughout the rug are six-pointed stars; Lesghi stars (a common motif in Caucasian rugs); four-cornered knots, an ancient symbol used throughout art history, in this case representing destiny; combs, used for tamping down the weft when weaving. Animals dot the design as well; see if you can spot rooster, eagles, and the multitude of abstract composite birds throughout.

The main border is a well-developed take on the running water design, another common motif in Caucasian rugs, especially Soumaks. The minor border is a curled leaf design.

The color palette of the rug is limited to browns and tans, indigo blues, and a hot pink (an early synthetic dye!).

In good condition, with signs of wear throughout; foundation is still intact and edges have been reinforced for longevity. Soumak weave, no pile, with a heavy but loose handle.
