This blanket was likely woven by the Fulani people in Mali during the middle of the 20th century.
It was woven in multiple stripes which have been attached horizontally. It features an eye dazzling checkerboard composed of white, black, red, green, blue and a sunny yellow-orange. Four individual squares around the perimeter are woven with the red-yellow-green tricolor of the Malian flag.
Via The Metropolitan Museum of Art "The checkerboard, a basic West African composition, ultimately may derive from Islamic influences. Inscribed "magic squares" carry mystical significance in Islam, and the orderly cosmos is often symbolized by an arrangement of squares emanating from a central point."
In very good condition, with minor fraying on the ends.
