Regular price $250.00 Sale

Vintage West African Batik.

Batik is a resist technique used for dyeing that originated in Java, Indonesia. Many places in the world have their own version of batik, and the resist used can either be wax or some other type of paste. The resist is used to trace a design onto the fabric using various methods. The material is then dipped into the dye vat. The wax is then rinsed off with boiling water and the design appears.

The design in this particular piece is pictorial, and depicts a shepherd with two rams grazing in the foreground. In the background we see three houses on the right hand side. Dyed a bright cobalt blue, this batik is a great multi use textile that can be use as a wall hanging, framed and hung up like a painting, or put on a table as a decoration.

In excellent condition, with no signs of wear. Heavy cotton twill, with a sturdy and flexible handle.
