Yazd rug, handwoven in Central Iran during the first quarter of the 20th century.
This rug features a curvilinear floral motif in blues and tans on a cochineal red field. The design is a full Shah Abbas design, with cloud bands, leaves, and palmettes, all linked by tendrils. This design is named after Abbas I, the Great, the third Safavid ruler of Persia from 1588-1629. He created splendid court weaving workshops in Isfahan, his capital city.
The main border is composed of a tulip meander, while the minor border contains a general floral meander.
The rug has been resized from a larger size. In good condition, signs of wear consistent with age. Some wear throughout where pile has worn to the foundation, which is still intact. Edges have been reinforced to prolong longevity.
