This kilim handwoven in the Balkans, from the second quarter of the 20th century.
It features a soft brick red field. The design is composed of a central diamond with geometric blossoms, and smaller diamonds in the corners repeating the central design. The border is composed of a geometric design in pastel blues, creams, and soft reds. Black is used throughout the rug to outline the shapes.
This type of rug is traditionally called Sarkoy, however this is a bit of a misnomer. Although there is a Turkish harbor on the Black Sea named Sarkoy, it is also a term used by Turkish rug dealers to describe rugs made in Bulgaria, Macedonia, Romania, and the Balkans at large, and has nothing to do with the port city.
In excellent condition, signs of wear consistent with age. Flatwoven, with a light yet sturdy handle. Very finely woven.
