Kerman rug woven in Central Iran during the late 19th century.
This stunning Kerman rug is composed of a central medallion design with four cornices on a cochineal red field. The floral design is curvilinear and complex; notice the four corners with cypress trees and the botehs harmoniously filling up the space.
The main border is composed of a cartouche motif (less common than the floral meander). In each long cartouche is a duo of blossoms, while in the smaller cartouches we find a cross and diamond design. The minor borders are composed of the same floral meander design.
The main color palette of the rug is cochineal reds and indigo blues, while ivory and camel tones are used for the detailing.
In very good condition, signs of wear consistent with considerable age. Pile is low, with a softer handle.
