This vintage salt bag was woven by in the Shahsavan of Northwest Iran during the second quarter of the 20th century.
It features a soumak woven face with a repeat of totemic floral forms in a spectacular array of tones of green, yellow, turquoise and multiple red tones on a navy ground. The random placement of color and the outlining in contrasting tones gives this piece real movement and sparkle. The whole is framed by a thin meandering border in red and brown on bright yellow ground. It is embellished with lively braided tassels flanking the neck. The back is a simple kilim dyed with aubergine that vibrates with its subtle color variations.
A salt bag or Namakdan is a weaving intended to store and transport rock salt. Both shepherds and nomads carry chunks of salt on long journeys for their animals to lick for nutrients.
In Very Good condition, some wear to the braided tassels. Hard-wearing with a stiff weave.
