This Mahal rug was handwoven during the second quarter of the 20th century in Western Iran.
This rug features a field of scrolling vines with palmettes in blues, coral, and red and gold on a spectacular blue field. Masterfully rendered and perfectly spaced to be perfectly ornate without feeling gaudy. The central medallion and cornices blend harmoniously with the rest of the patterning adding a distinct flavor while maintaining a strong continuity. The main border is composed of a floral motif of rosettes in abstracted vases on a contrasting brick ground. There is a wonderful moment where a bouquet of irises is rendered in each corner where the border reconciles.
In very good condition with very little evidence of wear especially for its considerable age.
