This Serapi rug was handwoven during the late 19th century.

It features the classic Heriz layout with a graphic geometric central medallion. Great quality 19th-century Heriz rugs are often referred to as Serapi. Serapi patterning like what is exhibited here is often looser and freer than most later Heriz rugs. Serapis also have a softer palette and can include some unexpected tones. The wonderful and unexpected use of multiple green tones in the medallion as well as the sensational border set this piece apart. The green tones work perfectly in conjunction with the soft brick, coral, blues, coral, and ivory. The contrasting ivory cornices lighten the composition and add visual interest.

In very good condition, rewoven in some areas and professionally repaired. End borders have been rewoven. Low pile with a sturdy handle.
