This Gabbeh rug was handwoven in Southern Iran during the 20th century.  It features is a lion holding a saber in front of the sun which the classic national symbol of Iran. Following the Islamic revolution in Iran, this symbol was replaced on the national flag. Here the lion is rendered in orange with a full mane against a red background which has faded through 2/3 of the rug leaving the remaining third more saturated. A mohawk top white sun peeks over it's back.

This Gabbeh rug was handwoven in Southern Iran during the 20th century.

It features is a lion holding a saber in front of the sun which the classic national symbol of Iran. Following the Islamic revolution in Iran, this symbol was replaced on the national flag. Here the lion is rendered in orange with a full mane against a red background which has faded through 2/3 of the rug leaving the remaining third more saturated. A mohawk top white sun peeks over its back. The whole composition is framed by a border of chain-linked rosettes.

The condition is excellent. In unused condition, with no signs of wear. Plush and densely woven.
