This Art Deco rug was handwoven in Tientsin, China during the middle of the 20th century.
It features a wonderful composition of a small elephant looking back with its trunk lifted upwards, atop an open grass green ground. Well executed in two tones of gray with details of rich red in the trunk and ears and striking ivory eyes and tusk. In classic feng shui, an elephant with raised trunk represents good luck, wealth, and success. A very playful piece with a rare and unexpected subject.
In very good condition. Some very light staining on a few fringes. Dense and durable with a heavy handle.
