This Kazak rug was handwoven in the Southwest Caucasus during the early 20th century.
A striking example featuring three boldly drawn stepped medallions set against a vibrant, glowing red field. The palette is classic Southwest Caucasian: deep indigo, moss green, ivory, and saturated natural reds that radiate warmth and energy. The central medallion really pops and is distinguished by a lovely jewel toned blue green and enhanced by a starkly contrasting ivory outline that giving the piece strong graphic presence and beautiful symmetry.
The composition is framed by a rhythmic Caucasian border of diamonds and scrolling vine forms, rendered in rich blues and the same red as the field. The wool is soft, glossy, and beautifully patinated — a hallmark of higher-quality Kazak weaving from the turn of the 20th century.
A wonderful example of the type: bold, colorful, and deeply characterful, yet refined enough to sit comfortably in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
