A large Tongan barkcloth decorated with bold geometric and figural motifs in deep brown and black natural dyes. The central field is organized in panels of repeating triangular forms and small clustered dots, framed by intricate borders of interlocking patterns that create strong graphic contrast against the lighter ground.
Architectural or ceremonial structures appear along the upper register, giving the composition a narrative quality while maintaining the rhythmic geometry typical of traditional tapa decoration. The surface retains the characteristic texture of hand-beaten bark, with subtle tonal variation from the dyeing and rubbing process.
Made by beating the inner bark of the paper mulberry tree into broad sheets and decorating them with natural pigments, barkcloth has long been used In Tonga for ceremonial, domestic, and decorative purposes. The large square format and bold design make this example particularly striking as a wall hanging or textile artwork.
