This quilt was hand-sewn and embroidered in North America in 1889.
This charming late 19th-century redwork quilt is a captivating snapshot of American domestic life, hand-stitched in 1889. Executed in signature turkey red thread on a cotton ground. It is composed of whimsical, illustrative embroidery blocks, each individually rendered with delicate linework and heartfelt imagination.
Motifs range from bucolic scenes of children at play and floral sprays to farm animals, birds, insects, and the occasional wise owl or blooming bough. One panel reads, “A charm that will to sleep,” echoing the tranquil, nostalgic spirit that permeates the whole. Each vignette reflects the period’s fascination with innocence, nature, and the virtues of a simple rural life. Both a folk art treasure and a textile document of 19th-century girlhood. It is lovingly quilted in a diamond grid, showing signs of age and historic repair. This only enhances its narrative quality, offering a beautiful patina and authentic texture.
In good condition, it has been conserved with white patches. The white cotton ground is discolored from use. . Has a light and airy handle.
