A striking fragment of late antique Egyptian textile preserving two richly worked decorative bands against a warm brown linen ground. Each band is woven in deep brown-black wool and enlivened with fine ochre detailing, including net-like lattice patterns, small geometric compartments, and a rhythmic sawtooth edging.
The bands were likely once part of the ornamental program of a tunic or other garment, related to the woven clavi and decorative strips characteristic of Coptic dress. Their unusually dark palette and intricate, almost lace-like drawing give the fragment a particularly graphic presence.
More than 1,400 years old, the textile survives with a remarkable sense of structure despite its fragmentary condition, offering a compelling glimpse into the sophisticated textile traditions of late antique Egypt.
