An extraordinary Armenian inscribed rug dated 1894, with a powerful sequence of geometric medallions set against a richly colored field of red, ivory, green, blue, yellow, and aubergine. The drawing is wonderfully individual, with bold hooked forms, small floral devices, and a lively multicolored border framing the composition.

Most compelling is the woven Armenian inscription, which appears to read:

“The rug of Satenik Abovian, in the year 1894.”

Rather than restoring away its history, we chose to leave the rug largely in its as-discovered condition, giving it only a series of gentle soak washes. Beneath what must have been decades of accumulated dust emerged a remarkably vivid original palette, making the survival of its color all the more striking.

A deeply personal object as well as a superb piece of Caucasian weaving, the inscription preserves the name of its owner or maker alongside the exact year of its creation giving the rug an unusually direct connection to the life behind it.
