This Nakshi Kantha was crafted in Bengal during the late 19th century.
Kantha is a Bengali folk tradition of embroidering textiles using recycled cloth. This Kantha is a narrative Kantha that tells a story over multiple scenes. It may display a classic folk story or something relevant to the maker. A variety of scenes of village life are showcased; including animals being fed from trees, lovers dancing, and a man with two faces. A sense of symmetry is achieved by the inclusion of a grand paisley motif in each of the four corners. A very intriguing piece that incorporates many varied scenes into a visually balanced whole.
