An unusual vintage Baluch pictorial rug depicting a modern urban streetscape, with cars, roadways, streetlights and a skyline of multistory buildings rendered in a wonderfully naive, almost diagrammatic style. The imagery reflects the inventive pictorial tradition that developed among Afghan weavers in the later 20th century, translating scenes of contemporary life into the vocabulary of the knotted rug.
The rug has been heavily washed and sun-faded, producing an exceptionally soft palette of sand, dusty rose, pale terracotta, celadon, muted aqua and warm brown. A geometric border frames the city scene, while broad striped flatwoven panels at either end retain a more traditional Baluch character.
The subdued coloration gives this otherwise highly graphic piece an unexpectedly quiet, contemporary presence.
