Cochineal Dyeing Demo w/ Omar Chasan
Join us for a special natural dyeing session with fourth generation weaver and master dyer Omar Chasan who is visiting us from Teotitlan, Oaxaca. Omar will prepare his dyeing pots on site to color natural wool using cochineal, one of the most ancient and treasured dyes of Mesoamerica.
Designed with a strong educational focus, this session offers a deep understanding of the complexity and cultural significance of cochineal dye production. You’ll understand the fascinating color transformations that occur through interaction with various natural elements, as well as the continuous exploration that Omar has undertaken to deepen his knowledge of this remarkable dye.
As part of this unique experience, you’ll have the opportunity to dip a wool keychain and create your own one off, hand-dyed piece as a personal connection to this dye.
