This finely woven late 19th-century Shirvan prayer rug exemplifies the sophisticated graphic language of the eastern Caucasus. Woven on a luminous ivory ground, the field is filled with an elegant lattice of stylized flowering plants and geometric blossoms, creating a rhythmic all-over pattern that is both highly ordered and remarkably lively.
The stepped mihrab is framed by a striking reciprocal border and contains a vertical arrangement of flowering motifs that echo the design below, reinforcing the rug’s balanced composition. The spacious ivory spandrels are animated by stylized trees, rosettes, and small geometric devices that lend the piece an airy, almost architectural quality.
Its palette is especially appealing, combining soft madder pinks, deep indigo blues, ivory, walnut brown, and touches of pale yellow-green. The natural dyes have mellowed beautifully with age, producing the gentle abrash and subtle tonal variation prized by collectors.
Equally compelling as a collector’s piece or displayed as textile art, it possesses the refined geometry and vibrant color that have made Caucasian rugs among the most celebrated village weavings of the nineteenth century.
