A striking Miao batik wall hanging or coverlet on a deep indigo ground, densely animated with birds, butterflies, fish, flowers, and curling vines in white wax resist. The imagery draws on a rich symbolic vocabulary associated with the natural world, fertility, abundance, renewal, and continuity.
At the center, a framed vignette of a bird poised above two fish anchors the composition, while butterflies and flowering forms spread exuberantly across the surrounding field. The large scale and carefully balanced layout suggest a textile intended for display or use as a decorative covering rather than as garment material.
The crisp white drawing against saturated indigo gives the piece tremendous graphic clarity, while the fluid hand-drawn wax lines retain the spontaneity and individuality of its making.
