Book of Ruth, 2021
This hand-embroidered work of cotton over found wool is Richard's most recent work and is a beautiful statement piece, measuring over six feet in length. It features two central figures floating on a cloud and surrounded by hanging tassels, ornate swags and lively rinceau. Some elements are native to the tapestry whereas others have been added and accentuated to fully immerse the viewer into the heavenly scene which incorporates a color palette of blush pink, pastel blues, burnt orange, white and black.
According to the artist, this piece is a homage to the collage work of Ruth Marten. The most prominent feature of the central characters is their distinctive white and black hair which Is lush and explodes outwards. A distinctive feature Marten herself was famous for.
via Paper magazine regarding Ruth Marten:
“In addition to prolific stints as an illustrator and tattoo artist, native New Yorker Ruth Marten has been exhibiting her art in galleries for decades. For her latest body of work Marten’s embellished recombinants of 17th and 18th century engravings seamlessly weave radical alterations, subtle visual humour and ecstatic fantasy into delirious social landscapes.”
