Small Oaxacan Zapotec Weaving - 7" x 1'1

Regular price $150.00 Sale

A bold mid–20th century Zapotec pictorial weaving from Oaxaca, Mexico, featuring the profile of a stylized figure in vivid detail. The face, woven in slate grey, is framed by long black hair and a richly patterned striped headdress in green, red, and blue, accented with white. The figure wears a beaded blue necklace, adding further ornament.

Set against a striking fuchsia-pink ground, the image is framed by horizontal striped bands at top and bottom in earthy browns, greens, and ivory. Small floating motifs enliven the field, and the rug is finished with fringe at both ends.

These small format pictorial weavings, sometimes called samplers or decorative mats, were produced in Zapotec villages such as Teotitlán del Valle during the mid-20th century. They often blended regional weaving traditions with motifs influenced by popular imagery and tourist demand. This striking profile composition shows the weaver’s technical skill and ability to capture expression within the tight geometry of tapestry weave.
