Small Oaxacan Zapotec Weaving - 9" x 1'4

Regular price $150.00 Sale

A small Zapotec weaving from Oaxaca, Mexico, likely mid–20th century, featuring a boldly stylized dancing figure at center. Rendered with outstretched arms and parted legs, the figure suggests festive movement. It wears a lime-green costume and balances a rainbow-striped headdress, evoking the colorful attire of Oaxacan fiestas and traditional dance ceremonies The figure is framed by a saturated red ground and bordered with narrow horizontal stripes in purple, white, and black. Braided wool fringe finishes both ends.

Such miniature pictorial rugs were often woven in Zapotec villages like Teotitlán del Valle as samplers or decorative mats, showcasing both the technical skill of the weaver and their playful engagement with community imagery. The lively dancer links this piece to Oaxaca’s celebrated tradition of weaving and performance.
