This saddle blanket was woven in Tibet at the turn of the 20th century.
These rugs are known as a Makden and were intended to be used under a horse saddle in Tibet. This piece has been woven in two pieces and attached with cotton fabric. Two leather pieces have been woven in to attach the blanket to the animal. Each half features a mandala filled with four bats on an orange ground and a lively blue cloud motif where the halves interface.. The outer border features cloud-bands and auspicious symbols.
In Good condition. Various areas of wear and some color run in the reds
