Hand-painted batik textile from Java, Indonesia, made during the mid-century.
This textile is a kemben batik tulis, or ceremonial women's breast wrapper or cloth. Batik is a wax-resist technique, in this case, used to draw tiny motifs around a large plain lozenge, known as sindangan, or beam of light. The color palette is composed of browns, camels, and blacks.
In excellent condition, signs of wear consistent with age. Cotton twill with a very light handle.
