Hand-painted batik textile from Java, Indonesia, made during the mid-century.
This textile is an ikat kepala, or men's head wrapper or cloth, which can be folded in infinitely complex ways. Batik is a wax-resist technique, in this instance, used to draw tiny floral and animal motifs around a large plain diamond, known as tengahan. The color palette is composed of browns, camels, and blacks.
In excellent condition, signs of wear consistent with age. Cotton twill with a very light handle.
