This Huipil was woven was woven on a backstrap loom in Guatemala in the 20th century.
This spectacular Huipil is alive with symbolism and saturated color. The brocaded upper panel features a lush tableau of birds, flowers, and brilliantly woven fish, each motif carrying deep resonance in Maya tradition. Birds evoke freedom and the sky, flowers embody fertility and beauty, and fish symbolize life’s connection to water and abundance.
Framed by bold zig-zag and stepped patterns in a spectrum of rainbow hues, the imagery flows across the surface like a woven tapestry of the natural world. The lower section, in deep crimson, is finely embroidered with bright horizontal accents, while a blue velvet neckline adds a touch of elegance and texture. Both a garment and art object, it is an expression of cultural continuity and individual artistry. Its vibrant palette and layered symbolism make it a striking collector’s piece.
