This Ait Ouaouzguite rug was woven south of the High Atlas mountains of Morocco during the 20th century.
This lively rug features a lattice design field surrounded by a border of large rosettes in red and yellow on a green ground. The design is almost completely obscured by a thin shaggy pelt-like pile. Moving the pile around unveils hidden parts of the design. A very fun and distinctive piece. Was likely intended to be used "upside down". The green is reminiscent of a naturally nuanced jadestone and the wool has the hand of a soft sheepskin.
