A vibrant Yoruba beaded and woven shoulder bag from Nigeria, featuring a fully beaded pictorial front and a handwoven dyed cotton back. The front panel depicts a lively scene centered on a stylized horse, shown beside a vessel that may represent a feed or water bucket, with two figures and a bird nearby.
In Yoruba visual culture, horses are often associated with prestige, rank, wealth, and ceremonial display. Here, the animal is given a strong central presence, rendered in dense glass beadwork with bold color blocking, red outlines, and wonderful graphic charm.
The reverse is made from handwoven cotton with deep indigo and earth-toned dyeing, giving the cloth a smoky, mud-toned surface with subtle striping and visible signs of age and use. The strap is composed of stacked black vulcanized rubber disks, adding a distinctive sculptural quality.
Both decorative and functional, this piece combines beadwork, woven cloth, and recycled rubber into a richly textured object with strong visual character and cultural resonance
