This bold and finely executed flatwoven kilim from Pirot, Serbia, features a rhythmic lattice of diamonds and blossoming bud motifs arranged across a vibrant red field. The powerful graphic border is composed of stylized, angular vine-scroll forms and rendered in tones of black, ivory, ochre, pink, and apricot.
At the top, the woven Cyrillic inscription “ВЕЗИРАR” (Bezirac) suggests a prestigious workshop or district, likely tied to a“Bezir” (vizier) a high-ranking Ottoman official. This connection reflects the historical layering of Ottoman influence and local identity in Serbian textile traditions.
