A powerful and beautifully balanced antique Serapi woven at the height of the tradition in the late 19th century. A spacious lattice is filled with large-scale, angular floral and leaf forms and set on a desirable ivory ground. The drawing is confident and architectural, with generous spacing that gives the design clarity and presence. The palette is classic and softly aged, combining brick red, terracotta, indigo, and blue-green tones against the warm ivory ground. The colors retain depth while showing the gentle mellowing associated with natural dyes and long use.

Woven in wool pile on a cotton foundation, the rug has a sturdy yet supple handle typical of early Serapi production. Nicely framed by a well proportioned border featuring a geometric rosette and leaf motif sandwiched between finely articulated guard borders.

This is a strong example of the Serapi tradition, prized for its scale, restraint, and graphic authority. Equally suited to a refined modern interior or a serious traditional collection.

In very good condition with some areas of professional restoration that blend into the rug. Both ends have been reinforced.
