This elegant silk pha sin or traditional tube skirt was handmade northeast Thailand during the middle of the 20th century.

It is a masterful example of mudmee (ikat) weaving from the Isaan region. The central field (phuen sinh) displays alternating vertical bands of nested diamonds and stylized rice ear or flame motifs that are elongated and tapered into arrow forms that symbolize fertility, protection, and spiritual aspiration in regional Lao-Tai iconography.

The top band (hua sinh) offers a rhythm of red flame-like verticals against the solid black field, creating a subtle temple silhouette. The use of a deep black ground that was either dyed with ma kham (iron-rich tamarind) or an early synthetic dye creates a powerful backdrop for the earthy gold, ochre, claret, and aubergine tones of the pattern. The vertical flow of motifs and the disciplined geometry give the cloth a sense of both sacred stillness and dynamic energy.

This sarong would have been worn wrapped around the waist for ceremonies, temple offerings, or rites of passage. Its somber elegance and elongated motifs suggest formal or even funerary use.
