This elegant silk pha sin or traditional tube skirt was handmade in northeast Thailand during the middle of the 20th century.
It is a masterful example of mudmee (ikat) weaving from the Isaan region. The main field (phuen sinh) showcases a staggered arrangement of stylized vegetal or flame motifs in golden ochre and brick red, which is an elegant reinterpretation of classic Lao-Tai design language passed down through generations of Isaan weavers.
The upper band (hua sinh) is particularly dynamic with a row of nested diamond medallions rendered in crisp ikat outlines, framed by stepped guard stripes in warm rust tones. This dramatic horizontal panel adds structural rhythm and draws the eye across the body of the cloth, an aesthetic and technical feat that speaks to the skill of the weaver.
While this sarong is utilitarian in form, its rich visual complexity would have made it suitable for temple festivals, weddings, or formal community occasions.
