This rug was likely woven likely in the Hakkari - Rawanduz corridor of the Kurdish Highlands of Iraq during the turn of the 20th century
This deeply expressive Kurdish village rug presents a masterclass in tribal geometry, color harmony, and cultural symbolism. It features a field anchored by two nested diamond medallions, each filled with small, rhythmic glyph-like motifs and set against a ground of saturated indigo blue and madder red abrashed into glowing mineral shades. Surrounding the central field are multiple stacked borders, each richly detailed and often diverging into completely different patterns at times. The diagonal lattice framework and minor pattern shifts reflect the weaver’s intuitive, almost musical approach to balance. A wonderful palette that also includes teal, brick, yellow, ivory, and sapphire is enhanced by lush, lanolin rich wool.
In very good condition with some oxidation to the browns.
