This Asafo flag was handmade by the Asante people of coastal Ghana during the second quarter of the 20th Century.
Asafo means 'war people" and the Cape Coast of Ghana has a strong tradition of local militias protecting each region of the coast that dates back hundreds of years. Each group creates their own flag to represent them. These colorful flags are appliquéd on both sides to reference local Akan proverbs and are used during ceremonial occasions. The Union Jack in the top corner is featured on flags prior to Ghanaian independence in 1957 whereas post-independence flags depict the Ghanaian flag.
The flag is in good condition various stains and holes show it well used for it's intended purpose.
