Asafo means 'war people" and the Cape Coast of Ghana has a strong tradition of local militias protecting each region of the coast that dates back hundreds of years. Each group creates their own flag to represent them. These colorful flags are appliquéd on both sides to reference local Akan proverbs and are used during ceremonial occasions.
