This squarish Afshar rug was handwoven during the early 20th century.
It features a repeat field of cartouche-like devices on a sandy camel field. The devices are outlined in greens and soft blues filled with flowering vases on red ground. Below each vase, the "Ya Allah" is written in Arabic script. Ya Allah is a term in supplication and the repetitive rendering of the phrase implies this rug likely held a spiritual significance. It may have been intended for use as a Sufi meditation mat with the "Ya Allah" as the mantra. The whole is framed by a small inner border of diagonal stripes and a bigger main border of large-scale rosettes alternating in blue, red, and black rosettes.
In very good condition, with some wear consistent with age. Wear to one end in the original. Dense, plush pile with a sturdy handle.
