Art Deco rug handwoven in Tientsin, China during the second quarter of the 20th century.
This funky rug features a mauve colored border and silver grey field that looks brighter or darker depending on the direction of the wool. Some abrash is present in the center of the rug (pictured), where the grey shade changes. The design is woven in vibrant pinks, blues, greens, and purples, lending a more psychedelic and modern feel to the rug.
The scene depicted is of country life, represented by the rooster and hen grazing with their two chicks in the bottom left corner. In the right-hand corner we see a banana tree growing, surrounded by plum blossoms (a winter symbol signifying beauty and longevity) and chrysanthemums (a autumn symbol signifying pleasant retirement and long life). In the top left we have a pomegranate tree with fruit (pomegranate is a symbol of fertility) and peony flowers, and further up the tree we find peach blossoms (a symbol of spring signifying marriage and longevity). The peony pared with peach blossom symbolizes a long and prosperous life. Below the tree we see more blossoms, potentially lotus flowers. Above the tree on the upper left is a pink sun behind some clouds, representing the sky.
All of these elements combined tell the story of a happy, healthy, prosperous country life - what a wonderful addition this could be to a city home in need of some life!
