This Kurdish wagireh was handwoven during the second quarter of the 20th century.
This rare and expressive Kurdish wagireh or sampler rug is a visual archive of design. Woven not for the market but as a reference tool, wagireh offered master weavers a compact way to preserve and transmit important elements of a pattern. Lush florals, scrolling vinery, and medallion fragments bloom in bold juxtaposition, floating across an asymmetrical field divided by tone and structure. The field’s deep indigo ground plays host to densely branched flowerheads and palmettes, while a large scale ivory cartouche anchors one side with a classical medallion and garden inspired flourishes.
At 4’3” x 6’10”, this is a substantial wagireh. A collector’s gem with the soul of a sketchbook.
In very good condition with even wear throughout.
