An elegant vintage Tabriz carpet distinguished by its unusually deep indigo-blue field and spacious floral drawing. A softly articulated central medallion anchors the composition, surrounded by scrolling vines, palmettes, blossoms and delicate boteh rendered in saturated shades of cornflower and sky blue, rose, coral, red, celadon, camel and ivory.
The broad madder-red border provides a striking contrast to the dark field, carrying an expressive procession of large palmettes and flowering vines. Pale blue and warm ivory guard borders lighten the perimeter and give the composition a beautifully layered frame.
The rug has mellowed wonderfully with age, with areas of lower pile lending the surface a softly distressed character and allowing the rich blues and reds to take on a particularly atmospheric quality. A sophisticated Tabriz with an unusually relaxed, painterly presence.
