This rare cotton pile rug is a wonderful example of early 20th century weaving from India’s Deccan region, likely originating from a workshop in Hyderabad or Bidar. Though long attributed to Agra, emerging scholarship suggests that many rugs of this type, with their Persianate design vocabulary and unique structural features, reflect a broader and more diverse history of Indian carpet production beyond the colonial centers.

This Agra rug was woven in Northern India during the late 19th century.  It features an elegant all-over herati design in crimson and icy blue on an oxidized brown ground. The crimson tone utilizes lac which is a dye derived from insects and characteristic of Northern India weaving from both Amritsar and Agra. The whole is framed by a reconciled palmette border. A portion of foundation is visible revealing that the underlying cotton has been dyed with indigo.

This Mamluk design rug was woven in India during the 21st century.  It features the distinctive patterning and color palette of classical Mamluk rugs. Mamluk rugs are a type of rug that was woven in Egypt during the 15th and 16th centuries. The graphic central medallion is formed of concentric shapes that gives the rendering a kaleidoscopic feel. Antique Bengal Kantha featuring a wild and asymmetrical scene with a small off-center mandala. It is full of various motifs from fish, horses, elephants, and people. The people can be seen in pairs stacked on top of one another, riding a horse and an elephant as well as inside a Vimana or flying palace. The stitching gets fuller and more saturated in the center and small pinwheel motifs have been added giving the piece a more traditional focal point. The patterning is broken in a section in which the inclusion of an elephant adds some interest.
