Vintage Sogan Batik - 3'5 x 8'2

Regular price $175.00 Sale

This vintage batik textile is an example of batik tulis—the traditional, hand-drawn wax-resist dyeing technique of Java, Indonesia. The hand-drawn pattern features a refined variation on the classic parang motif—a powerful Javanese pattern traditionally associated with nobility and resilience. Hand-drawn in warm shades of soga brown and deep indigo on a soft ivory ground, the diagonal bands are filled with intricate botanical and symbolic detailing, forming a flowing rhythm that evokes both movement and balance.

Each motif was meticulously applied by hand using a canting tool, a process that often takes weeks to complete and results in richly layered, deeply expressive cloth. The repeating geometry creates a mesmerizing visual rhythm, while subtle imperfections and variations speak to the human touch behind its creation.

This piece is likely from the mid-20th century and may have been used as a ceremonial or formal wrap (kain panjang). Today, it makes a beautiful statement as a wall hanging, draped textile, or framed textile art.
