This Ersari Turkmen rug was woven during the first quarter of the 20th century in Northern Afghanistan.
It features a traditional Ersari gül design with a soft palette of orange and indigo on an earthy madder red ground with accents of natural undyed brown and ivory wool. The secondary güls are more skeletal and interconnected by thin weblike lines. Of particular interest are two columns of amulets on either end of the field which add some distinction and serious interest to this usually straightforward design lexicon. In a hard-to-find squarish size.
In very good condition for its considerable age, with wear throughout but to the foundation in some areas (as pictured). Low pile, with a soft and airy handle.
