Vintage Khotan rug woven in the Xinjiang region of Northwest China. The Khotan Oasis lies near the Takla Makan Desert in the Tarim Basin in the area referred to as both Northwest China and East Turkestan. It was an important center of rug production throughout the centuries.
This rug features a graphic pattern utilizing elements found along both ends of the Silk Road typical of Khotan rugs. Multiple medallions in green, yellow, white, and red grow on totemic vines against a vibrant blue backdrop. The main border features alternating blue and red poppies. Each minor border displays a distinct yet simple pattern. This rug is in very good condition, with some wear in the field (as pictured).
The pile is thick and soft, with a lustrous shine.
